Percentage Of
X% of Y = Z
Formula: X% * Y / 100 = Z
where
- X = some percent
- Y = the number you want to figure a percentage of
- Z = the final number associated with X percent of Y
Example use cases:
- splitting a bill: 50% for 2 people, 33.33% for 3, 25% for 4, 20% for 5
- adding a tip: typically around 10% to 20%, depending on the service and location
What Percent?
Y is Z% of X
Formula: 100 * X / Y = Z%
where
- X = the original number
- Y = the number you want to see expressed as a percentage of X
- Z = the percentage of X that Y represents
Example use cases:
- figure how many questions you can get wrong on an exam and still have a passing grade
- know how many units of work you need to do in order to do your fair share
Percent Change
X to Y is Z% change
Formula: 100 * (Y - X) / X = Z%
where
- X = original number
- Y = final resulting number
- Z = percent change between X and Y
Example use cases:
- project changes in sales or profits for a business
- verify discount percentages on items which are allegedly on sale
Price With Sales Tax
Y% sales tax added to $X = $Z
Sales Tax Formula: Y% * $X / 100 = $Z
where
- X = retail price excluding sales tax
- Y = sales tax %
- Z = sales tax amount
Total Price Formula: $X * (1 + (Y%/100) = $Z
where
- X = retail price excluding sales tax
- Y = sales tax %
- Z = price inclusive of sales tax
VAT Calculator
$X - Y% VAT = $Z
VAT Exempt Pricing Formula: $X * ((100 - Y%) / 100) = $Z
where
- X = final price
- Y = VAT %
- Z = VAT exempt price
VAT Formula: $X * (1 - (1 - Y%/100)) = $Z
where
- X = final price
- Y = VAT % as a decimal
- Z = VAT amount
Discounted Price
Y% off of $X = $Z
Discount Price Forumla: (X% / 100) * Y = Z
where
- X = percent off, in percent
- Y = original retial price
- Z = sale price
Discount Amount Formula: Y * (100 - X%) / 100 = Z
where
- X = percent off, in percent
